San Francisco State University Professor and fitness enthusiast, Kent Lorenz found himself at one point early on indulging on junk food, in an on-again, off-again cycle with eating healthy. Keep reading to learn more about how he made the switch from a bad habit of ordering pizzas to consistently eating well and living a life around fitness and Trifecta's role in the transition.
"Being alone and responsible for your own meals when you’re a little bit younger, pizza delivery seems way more attractive than cooking your own food. It's much more challenging to focus on healthy eating." - Kent Lorenz, San Francisco, CA
From Undergrad Student to PhD Coach
I am a University Professor at San Francisco State University. I did a lot of sports growing up and of course, as you start to get older you realize that fitness is a big part of being a good athlete. When you get out of school and you transition out of organized sports you still want to be active and so I really got into strength training & conditioning.
My original career path was to be a high school physical education teacher, so I've always appreciated what quality instruction can do for the athletic development of kids. This connects my work as a physical education teacher educator, a physical activity researcher, and a strength and conditioning coach: Stronger, fitter, and more athletic children tend to grow up into healthier and more active adults. Fitness and physical activity have benefits when they are kids and that can translate into a better quality of life as an adult.
After realizing that high school physical education has it's limitations and challenges, I combined my love of sport, exercise and science into a new career path: Collegiate strength and conditioning. I moved to California to do a Master's degree in Exercise Physiology at San Diego State University. Fast forward to now, and I'm able to teach others from my experiences at the University-level.
I’m originally from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I’ve lived in the US now for about 15 years and specifically as it relates to nutrition, being alone and responsible for your own meals when you’re a little bit younger, pizza delivery seems way more attractive than cooking your own food. So of course, when you’re a student then it's more challenging to focus on healthy eating.
"I fell in love with college football Saturdays filled with pizza and beer, and I gained a lot of weight and lost a lot of my fitness."
Honorary San Franciscan Cycling (Not The Kind You Think)
Besides never being cold for the first year in California to now complaining about "chilly" days in San Francisco, I've been able to prioritize my health and fitness compared to when I was a graduate student. When I first moved, I was living on my own for the first time and was free to eat and drink anything I wanted to! I fell in love with college football Saturdays filled with pizza and beer, and I gained a lot of weight and lost a lot of my fitness.
My priorities were school and having a good time, so while I still worked out regularly, I didn't have a purpose or a focus for eating well and training. I love to exercise, but school always came first, and that didn't always leave room for healthy food. And to be honest, I wasn't equipped to make good food early on.
Like everybody else, you always want to be more muscular and be a little bit leaner. Up to that point, it was the classic idea of "I’m going to be really good for about 8 weeks and then something gets in the way and you backtrack for a little bit." Then you kind of go back into your old free-living habits and you get mad at yourself and think "I gotta get back into it." So I found myself doing this on-again, off-again cycle and it got to the point where like I just wasn’t feeling good and I recognized that it was purely based upon my lack of consistent quality nutrition.
"To be honest, I’m the leanest, fittest and strongest at 41 than I’ve probably ever been in my entire life. And Trifecta is a huge, HUGE part of that."
Fast Forward to Today
Now, after 15 years in the US, finishing two graduate degrees and having a full time faculty job, I have finally prioritized my health through regular training (CrossFit, running, rowing) and eating well; to which Trifecta and RP and huge components! When I first moved, it was about surviving school; now I can put my health and fitness as my number one goal and consistent, quality food is a big part of living well!
Now I can prioritize fitness, nutrition, and health because I’m in my early 40’s and if I don’t prioritize it, it’s only going to get worse. To be honest, I’m the leanest, fittest, and strongest at 41 than I’ve probably ever been in my entire life. And Trifecta is a huge, HUGE part of that. Virtually all of my protein comes from Trifecta so it allows me to plan and prep and get everything and go. That’s been a major benefit to it, is I have no excuses anymore. It’s just there and it's been wonderful.
I've learned about cooking and prepping meals, but Trifecta takes most of the guesswork away, and that allows me to focus on things I'm comfortable preparing for myself. Using Trifecta in combination with RP templates, I've really been able to take control over the past two years, and since I've added RP Coaching with Nathan Jenkins, PhD, CF-L1 (@gainzbydrj), I've been able to become more fit and healthy now than I have been in 20 years!
Flavorful and Nutrient-Dense Proteins
It’s one thing if it's organic and prepped, but if it tastes like cardboard it's not worth it, I can make cardboard for myself. I don’t need anyone to do that for me. I'm a big fan of the proteins-- especially the salmon fillets, it’s some of the best salmon consistently I’ve eaten in my entire life! So why wouldn’t I get it delivered to me?! Yes, it’s convenient and makes it easier to be consistent but the fact that its good food really helps.
